More Power

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Simply put, we need more energy available for doing the things that we use energy for in our daily lives.   From our standpoint, we really don’t care where the energy comes from – as long as there’s more of it.

Yes, when it comes down to oil or natural gas – we’re in the “Drill Baby Drill” camp.  We also think that there’s nothing wrong with employing the most state-of-the-art coal burning techniques in the use of electrical generation.  Same goes for building more nuclear powered plants to generate electricity.

We don’t spend a lot of time worried about the size of our carbon footprint and we think that the idea of “global warming” (if it were actually valid science) isn’t caused by man (or belching cows/and other livestock).

Where do we stand with alternative energy development?  We’re all for it and think that if “Green” gets it done – fantastic, let’s get going and get it done.

What we do have a problem coming to grips with are those who go out of their way to bash carbon-based energy and when they have the ability to stand up in support of alternative production methods – “Not In Our Back Yard” becomes the rallying cry.

From what we understand, that’s a big part of the matter in Washoe County as appropriate sign-offs are being sought to go forward with establishing Nevada’s first major wind farm, just outside of Reno.  rgj.com/article/20090106/NEWS18/90106077&OAS_sitepage=news.rgj.com%2Fbreakingnews

Based on the accounts, that we’ve been following through the media, provisions agreed to by the wind farm developers for area roads and other kinds of impact mitigations are very appropriate and nearby property owners should be given consideration to assist in dealing with having such a facility, next door.

After making necessary concessions that can be worked out to minimize the brunt, the project should be Okayed by county officials and the turbines should start turning as soon as the construction phase is carried out.

We also need to be going forward in taking full advantage of our wind energy sources in other parts of the state as well.

The Washoe County proposal is being developed on private land…areas on lands managed by federal agencies in Nevada, capable of wind energy development should also be put to use.

We also need to be aggressive in the processes of power transmission line expansion, making it possible to move electricity from remote locations to where the power is put to use.

Again, necessary details need to be taken into account and provisions implemented to go forward in a responsible fashion, but we can’t allow those in opposition to simply put in the way bureaucratic roadblocks and impediments that keep things from getting accomplished.

If naysayers want to live without electrical power and limit their carbon footprint – fine.  But those who aren’t interested in moving backwards shouldn’t be required to join them.
