Thanks For The Insights

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

At various times, since I started sharing thoughts in this forum, I have urged the need for better explanations and information regarding Nevada’s budget.  These posts have stressed that we as taxpayers need to understand what we are getting for the money currently spent as well as what we should expect if more funds are allocated.

In my writings I have also wondered what the game plan might be, looking ahead to the 2009 Nevada Legislative Session.  In 2008 Nevada Assemblywoman Barbara Buckley went on the road to hold several Town Hall meetings around the state.

While making our rounds in checking the discussions taking place in blogs and other web-based information sources we happened across a link which connects to Speaker Buckley’s 2020 project website.  http://www.nv2020.com/

Although we might not totally buy-in to all of the points of the presentations, available for downloading, we do appreciate the background that is included.  The details on pages 8 and 9 of “OverhaulingNVNov08” covers useful insights on Nevada general fund revenue sources and expenditures.

Page 34 of the presentation, covering changes in the ways Nevada’s financial foundation is structured, also provides meaningful common ground that give-and-take interactions can move forward, regardless of the position you might have on tax increases or budget reductions.

As the debates and interchanges unfold, having the best information will make progress possible.  Take a look at the information in Speaker Buckley’s material and also search for as many other sources on the topic as you can find.
