Getting You Involved In State Process -- Knowing Budget Details

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

In his State-of-the-State Address, Governor Gibbons urged Nevada citizens to take advantage of a new online website www.nevadaspending.com  This location provides the chance for all Nevadans to view the state’s budget and see for themselves the details that they hopefully wish to better understand.

“I encourage all Nevadans to look at this budget and offer your suggestions to your Legislators and to my office,” Governor Gibbons said.  This is your tax money and you deserve a voice in how it is spent.”

I think Governor Gibbons’ point of citizens being involved is very appropriate, although it will be difficult for most to commit the time needed to dig into the details that make up the numbers behind the graphs and headlines.

Along with tracking through the speech texts from Governor Gibbons and the Democratic response that was presented by Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley, we also received a very well-thought through statement from Assemblyman James Settelmeyer from Minden.

In addition to noting the negative consequences for taxing Nevada businesses in these difficult times, District 39 Assemblyman Settelmeyer outlined these points for approaching the upcoming Legislative session:

  • We need to put partisan politics aside and do what is best for the state of Nevada. There will be parts of the Governor’s proposal that we will disagree on but hopefully we can leave special interest groups behind and do what is best for all Nevadans.
  • I agree with the governor that we must eliminate any duplication from our government and that these changes, while difficult, will result in a more efficient and effective government.
  • Our goal needs to be efficiency in government. We can no longer allow the inefficient and costly concepts that have helped to create the train wreck we now face to continue. And until the government is efficient we shouldn’t ask the people to give more money in the form of taxes.
  • The people and business of the state are struggling to exist. This is not the time to break them by implementing new taxes.
  • We must also be careful about the sovereignty of the state. Some are talking about going after federal money, a state bailout. The federal government is not the solution, it is the problem. We can’t rely on it to fix our state. If not for all the feds unfunded mandates, we not be in the situation we are in now.

For those who might want to follow up with Assemblyman Settelmeyer -- (775) 450-6114, Settelmeyer@charter.net or at http://www.James4Nevada.org

The impression coming from the post-State-of-the-State speech, the real work of the 75th Nevada Legislative session will be very difficult and if attitudes continue to be as snarly as what seems to be the frame-of-mind from the majority party… minority party members, Nevada taxpayers and business interests in general will be facing a lot of “take that”

Which brings us back to highlighting Assemblyman Settelmeyer’s first point – “We need to put partisan politics aside and do what is best for the state of Nevada”

Tax and spend for social engineering is a waste of time and money.
The BO administration is attempting to establish a hybrid of socialism, communism, fascism and Marxism; a form of government that I'll call a Czarist Bureaucracy, terrifying!
