Progress In Resolving Nevada's Higher Education Budget Issue?
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Because of needing to be in another legislative hearing I wasn't able to attend the money committee meeting on Friday, dealing with Nevada's Higher Education System budgets. It seems from reading this news account from Saturday's Las Vegas Sun that I might have missed quite a show.
While a news story in March doesn't spell out the exact details of where things will wind up in June, it does suggest that some form of a plan is coming together for a solution.
Funding the University System at the 2006 level gets them into eligibility for Stimulus Package funds, but whether that will go to them on top of the budget increases that will be necessary to get them to the 2006 level -- or through creative accounting there will be more to the final details -- more information will need to be obtained.
Along with watching how legislators craft the final game plan, it will be just as interesting to see whether (and how) University officials take the outcome. Does Chancellor Rogers now turn to the same "statemanship" he's been using on the Governor to try and get more from the Legislature?
