Your Legislative Contact Needed Now
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Going back a number of sessions, smoking was once allowed inside the legislative building and many of those working as lobbyists, legislators and staff did smoke. One session a group prepared an ashtray that was distributed as gifts. At the bottom of the ash tray it was written -- "Lobbyists are the people who are hired to protect us from the people we elect."
As the 2009 Legislative session continues and we reach the point where we are now -- Nevada citizens might have elected a group that there is no protection from.
The current emphasis is on taxes, fees and every imaginable form of revenue enhancement, extracted from citizens, to fund the spending increases that have been determined as appropriate.
Legislators would have us believe (and they get really hurt feelings when the reality is pointed out to the contrary) that they "cut" state budgets and did so after difficult deliberations and painful considerations. The trouble is that reality shows the budget number is higher for the biennium being planned for. At best they might get credit for spending less than they normally increase.
Nevada citizens who have lost their jobs, or have seen their businesses go under because of not being able to afford to continue -- as well as those who are fighting hard to stay in business despite the challenges...have a whole different concept of what "cuts" are.
When the tax load being contemplated behind closed doors without public participation is put into place, struggling business enterprises and their employees will have even more of a burden to try and survive.
We encourage you to pick up your telephone and call the legislative "Hotline", asking for your specific Senator or Assembly representative. That number is 1-800-992-0973 You can also go to the legislative website and click through to the section for Legislators to identify and e-mail your member. This e-mail site is http://www.leg.state.nv.us.
At this point in time there isn't a specific bill number to refer to -- simply implore your representative to understand that given our economic condition...paying more to expand Nevada government spending is not an acceptable option.
