Fundamental Changes Needed

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

With an economy in serious decline, the 2009 Nevada Legislature increased spending and have just passed a massive tax increase ($781 million) (and let’s not forget the $200 million increase approved earlier in the session) to cover the costs.

Avoiding the reality that when the spending amounts are higher than they were – that’s not a “cut”, legislators try to out-talk the facts and use emotional appeals for what they did for the children.  The “cuts” made by legislators are best explained in how the process is flawed and in need of a complete overhaul.

Perhaps the best explanation for the reason why change is needed is offered here by the Nevada Policy Research Institute.

The majority of those who we as voters decide to send to Carson City in 2011 need to embrace the concepts of this change and build their campaigns on the principles for better government that they will work to implement.

As long as we continue to do what we’ve been doing (including the election of the those who have been part of the majority, controlling party for the 2009 Legislative Session) we will continue to get what we’ve got.  Already there is just cause to be deeply concerned over the tax increases being formulated for 2011.
