He’s From The Government And He’s Only Here To “Help”
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is pressing hard on the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) and doesn’t seem to be interested in livestock producers convincing him otherwise.
Although there are probably some significant holes in the argument that says if we don’t adopt a mandatory approach to NAIS, the economical underpinnings of international trade will collapse – if you say that loud enough in as many places as possible…some might actually believe you and cave in to your desired outcome.
An expanding program of going to more places, to “listen” to producers, has also been announced.
Farm Bureau’s policy position is in favor of keeping the NAIS program a voluntary program and it is possible to go forward with a true voluntary approach, providing incentives for those who wish to participate. Through economic encouragement it becomes worth participation and the arguments made in support of how the identification system ties in with trade actually might be legitimate.
