In Spite Of The Hoopla -- Teacher Pay Cuts Were More Political Hype Than Reality

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Even though there was so much political hot air expended over how Nevada teachers would see their pay checks “slashed” by 4 percent, this report, in this post legislative news account by the Reno Gazette Journal make it clear that what legislators decide doesn’t end up being the way it will actually play out.

Education and appropriate levels of funding is an important function for state government.    K-12 education came out of the 2009 Legislative Session whole, in spite of the economic hardships facing Nevada taxpayers.   Ultimately  though, the discussion needs to be redirected, spotlighting what we get for the funding that is appropriated.

This theme of being more equal than other came out in this Las Vegas Sun account, examining what wasn’t passed in the closing battles of the legislative session.

Because of their insatiable appetite for more, the Nevada educational community needs to begin to consider the reputation they are creating for themselves.  Given the frame of mind associated with the way educational “leaders” (teacher unions as well as educational bureaucrats) see things, what goes into paychecks is more important than what goes into the education of students.

Unfortunately, because of the sense of entitlement that this group seems to have – it is unlikely that they have the ability to transform such an assessment into meaningful reform.  It falls on Nevada citizens to come forward in pressing for accountability and advances in educational quality to match the resources expended in this critically important area.
