It Comes Down To Getting A Check

By:  Doug  Busselman, Executive Vice President

Based on the scientific principle of being politically correct, the issue of global warming is not about the validity of the theory -- it's about how much we care and how much we are willing to destroy our economy in the spirit of making a difference.

As the policy debate unfolds in Congress, in light of the requirement to have the United States punish itself for our ill-deserved successes, agriculture has something of a key role in the way the legislative actions will play out.

House Agriculture Committee chairman Collin Peterson of Minnesota has indicated that he's not pleased with the way that agriculture is being treated by the taxation scheme for saving the planet from getting warmer.

While we're only speculating at the way which Congressman Peterson thinks the way details should be for a meaningful solution, from this media account we do know that Department of Agriculture officials understand that it should entail writing checks.

We could hope that there's a better solution to resolving what's wrong with global warming policy than being bought off -- but, I'm afraid the expectation that I currently have is that those in the role of agricultural leadership aren't working for much more than that.
