There Is Work To Do And We Must Be Involved In The Doing

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

The 2010 November election seems like a long way from where we are today.  That cannot be the attitude we take unless we want to continue to get what we’ve been getting…increased state spending, growing bigger government, and the tax increases that are then necessary to pay for this expansion.

As highlighted in this Las Vegas Sun article, those with a vision for far more Nevada government will be working between now and Election Day to make their perspective happen.

Given the organizational work required to build the necessary grassroots framework to find, encourage and elect champions who support a limited and responsible approach for state government – our work must be a high priority with more than simply staying in our own neighborhoods and circle of acquaintances.

Many of the candidates that supporters for reduced government intrusion will be working to un-elect (especially a certain U.S. Senator) have election war chest that will seem almost unbeatable.  In these cases, organizational emphasis to inspire personal actions will be even more critical.

We also need to be engaged in activities to assist in raising funds for election of representatives who support similar principles and values that we hold and believe in.

From recent experience we have come to understand that “elections have consequences”.  It is important for those who need replacement that their actions in growing a more intrusive – burdensome tax-eating government also includes accountability.

Does Speaker Buckley's statement "broaden its tax base beyond gaming and sale taxes" mean an income tax?

Probably not a personal income tax. The general plan is to make Nevada voters not believe that they are the ones who are doing the paying. More than likely new tax plan will be based on corporate tax, maybe another run at gross receipts. Long shot might be a way of restructuring to gain portions of property taxes because local governments are so lucky to have the revenue sources they have.
