No Thanks – We’ve Got More Than Enough Government Already

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Growing more government seems to be a priority everywhere you turn these days.  The push for a national Health Care program, setting up a tax scheme to punish us for the energy we need to conduct commerce and live our life, expanding the reach of federal agencies like the EPA to take over every drop of water…and the list continues to grow.

At the state level, this philosophy of Nevada state government extending into every nook and cranny is also a priority, along with the need to increase spending and tax loads to cover the activities.  During the deliberations for the upcoming biennium budget, which starts July 1st, lawmakers seemed to think everything that came up was an “essential” service, adding back additional spending authority to the point that it required a Billion more in taxes to cover the tab.

Somehow we’re supposed to believe that there isn’t anything government can’t do to take care of anything.  The number of business enterprises being nationalized for “our” good is growing as is the debt load that at some point in time is going to need to be paid for.

Agriculture too is not immune to the reliance on federal dollars.  Although Nevada farmers and ranchers don’t produce very many crops that fit into the sphere of government payments, various conservation projects and practices do work to deliver funding.

One of the reasons we’ll be encouraged to re-elect our state’s senior U.S. Senator is his high level of power – translated to the notion that this position gives Nevada an inside track for untold flow of goodies.

It’s not apparent how one goes about the process of putting the paste back into the tube.  It likely starts at an individual basis, discontinuing the notion that every time there’s a need – government involvement is the answer.  In a broader context the push-back needs to come in the form of working to defund government expansion, restricting government spending and fighting to put off the strangle hold of government regulations.

As we continue to see the over-reaching of government intrusion the resounding response must be “Thank you, but NO Thank You…we’ve got too much already!”
