More Government – It’s Our Right?

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

As we approach the 4th day of July, 2009 it should give us pause to reflect on the contrast of today’s current events and those of 223 years ago.   Perhaps before we get too busy with the picnics, parades and fireworks it would be worth taking a few minutes to actually read the document that we’re celebrating

Back then they wrote about “unalienable Rights,” “endowed by their Creator” – today, television commercials tell us to call Harry Reid and thank him for the new right he’s working on legislating for us.  Their bumper stickers back then implored “Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death”…today we cheer for “Give Me Government Health Care – And I Have No Problem Of Having A Government Committee Decide When It’s My Time To Go!”  Those crazy guys back in 1776 risked everything they had (life, possessions, honor) to chase a dream of liberty – they threw off the oppressive yoke of tyranny.  Today we think nothing of a government agency telling us what type of light bulb we should be allowed to use.

Please click on the link that’s highlighted above and read the things that the patriots listed as their grievances.  You might be somewhat shocked as you work down the list, considering the things that they identified as reasons for going into revolutionary battles to win…especially as we  witness the “change” that we supposedly voted for last November.

In July of 1776, the organizing that was going on was intended to make a difference – taking on the most powerful government of the world and seeking to achieve Freedom.  I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same…that’s what we need to do too.
