Getting Involved And Supporting Candidates For Office
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Although most people look at the calendar and think that November of 2010 is off in the distance, too far away to get very excited over who should be elected to represent us in important capacities ranging from local to national offices – the truth is that now is when you need to get involved in supporting those who we need to get into office.
In some cases the persons we need to support will be taking on incumbents that need to be sent packing. Because of the advantages that such office holders have, building grassroots organizational strength requires getting to work and networking to overcome this higher hurdle. Likewise in those cases where there is an open seat, notably in Nevada’s Legislature with term limits taking effect, getting behind candidates who are getting started in their campaigns now is also critical.
Building on the frustrations of current circumstances and the blatant efforts of those in charge of our government bodies (state and national) to expand their reach beyond the limits of where government should go, charging us extra for their increased command and control, we need to push back, sending a message that seems to only be able to reach them by way of the ballot box.
Specifically looking at the Nevada Legislature, compelled in their last session of work to increase state spending above the levels from the previous two-year cycle and increase taxes by nearly a Billion dollars (if they can actually get that much from a significantly weakened economy) – we need to be able to elect a total of 15 Assembly members who will be willing to stand together and vote in unison against tax increases in the 2011 session. Having enough representation to achieve the two-thirds majority requirement, in the Assembly, is essential to reining in the expansion of Nevada government’s spending and taxing ways. Gaining a two-thirds majority in the Senate would also be beneficial, but possibly more difficult as you look at the number of races and the make-up of those who will be back without having to face voters.
There’s no question that getting involved now in establishing an extensive grassroots framework is critical to replacing those who need to be replaced in Washington, D.C.. These challenges represent formidable, up-hill battles that can only be successful through massive efforts to energize people power to overcome extremely large dollars of war chest accumulations that have been amassed to keep the incumbent in power.
Getting things back in line and headed in the proper direction isn’t going to be easy and if it’s not accomplished (even in a limited fashion) in the 2010 election…it’s going to get even worse as reapportionment plays itself out -- post 2010 census. For those who wish to make a difference to take back our state and nation, make yourselves known and get involved in being part of the force required to get it done.
