Agriculture Needs To Be Included To Make Climate Change Legislation Work

By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

When U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack went to the table to testify before the Senate Committee on the Climate Change bill, he said that to make things work, agricultural producers needed to be involved, carrying out practices to capture carbon in the soil.  Okay so far…

The trouble of course in this grand plan involves the details of how to pay for these benefits, as we read in this Reuters article – the costs for the benefit will costs the providers of the service more than what they will be getting for providing the benefit.  The math being an expense is a problem.  That problem goes well beyond just a problem for agricultural producers who will be penalized for any and all energy or other carbon-based thing they do – the whole darn country will be paying for something that wouldn’t be even on the table for consideration except for the majority political party not wanting to pass up an opportunity for more government control and greater expense for taxpayers.

As a side note, when I pulled up the Reuter’s News Service link there was a picture of a polar bear in the upper left hand corner and the promotional message asking the reader to "Help Fight Global Warming” – “Join Reuters Cause On Facebook”…you gotta love the unbiased perspective of the “news” media when it comes to dealing with this topic area.

By the way, I’m not going to become a “fan” and join Reuters Cause on Facebook – I’m already involved with another group on that social networking site… it’s called  STOP “Cap & Trade”!!
