Wouldn’t It Be Nice To Have A U.S. Senator Who Thought You Mattered?

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Having just finished reading a response letter that U.S. Senator Reid sent back to a constituent on S. 787, the Clean Water Reauthorization Act -- it seems they got their form letter versions of “Thanks for sharing your opinion” mixed up – sending the one that goes to an original letter-writer who supported the bill instead of the version that deals with someone opposed to the bill.

These things happen and we shouldn’t get to thinking that the most powerful legislator to ever come from Nevada actually has to care about what citizens of Nevada think.  He will vote the way he is going to vote and we should all be thankful that our U.S. Senator is so well positioned as to get for us what he decides we should be getting…

Contrast this approach with those presented here in Senator Mike Johanns news release where he is seeking to obtain meaningful information to assist his Nebraska constituents understand the costs they will be paying, should the Cap & Trade legislation go forward.

Granted, the Nebraska Senator isn’t the person with the clout and authority to either get an answer or drop the legislation in question without so much as a snowball’s chance in global warming – but, after 21-plus years so far of attempting to work with our Senator…it would be nice to experience a working relationship where you thought your concerns and ideas actually mattered.

That probably explains the reason why November of 2010 is such an important opportunity.
