Cooking The Climate Change Numbers

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Anthony Watts of SurfaceStations.org has released an interesting paper entitled, “Is the U.S. Temperature Record Reliable?”

The details of the booklet are encompassed in this introductory observation:

“The official record of temperatures in the continental United States comes from a network of 1,221 climate-monitoring stations overseen by the National Weather Service, a department of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  Until now, no one has ever conducted a comprehensive review of the quality of the measurement environment of those stations.”

Watts and a volunteer group of 650 have made it a point to visually inspect and photographically document more than 860 of the temperature stations around the country.

“We found stations located next to exhaust fans of air conditioning units, surrounded by asphalt parking lots and roads, on blistering-hot rooftops, and near sidewalks and buildings that absorb and radiate heat.”,  Watts reports in the document he’s prepared.  “We found 68 stations located at wastewater treatment plants, where the process of waste digestion causes temperatures to be higher than in surrounding areas.”

Base on the findings of the Watts’ team, 89 percent of the stations – almost 9 out of 10 – don’t match up with the National Weather Service’s own siting requirements, which stipulate that stations be 30 meters or about 100 feet or more away from artificial heating or radiating/reflecting heat sources.

To re-examine the logic behind the Waxman-Markey Climate Change legislation…

  • Point 1 – we believe that the world’s climate is warming,
  • Point 2 – we believe that the reason for this warming is man’s activities and abusive use of carbon-based energy
  • Point 3 – in order force American’s to use less carbon-based energy, we will significantly tax the use of carbon-based energy and people will either pay substantial amounts or switch to more appropriate “green energy” sources (which currently aren’t as cost-effective options without government-driven ‘enhancement’ of the cost for traditional energy sources)

Now we see the documented assessment that a government which can’t do too much right anyway, now can’t actually measure the temperature, which they would like us to believe is rising due to man-made causes.

I guess when you use official records of temperatures, that are collected in scorching-hot parking lots and other locations – maybe you do have “man-made” global warming…
