The Many Sounds Of “No”

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

We’ve all heard the word “No” and when hearing it, we probably didn’t always appreciate the message it communicated.

As a parent, I’ve heard more than one two-year-old express their imagined-independence in the expression of “No”.  I’ve also expressed my point of view on any number of requests, shared opinions and flat-out intended commands using the word “No”.

Over the past few weeks, perhaps more since the U.S. Senate Majority leader got his 60th member, from the “let’s count til we get a better number” Minnesota, we’ve been hearing the publicity campaign slogan to disparage the Republicans, labeling them as the “Party of No”.  I’m sure that the sound-bite repeating “news” media is enjoying having the concept to sell, in their desire to promote the socialistic agenda of the folks in charge of Washington, D.C.

I guess we’re suppose to believe that for every hair-brained scheme that some Democrat falls out of bed with, including the take-your-pick, intended self-inflicted and economy-destroying proposals (Climate Change Cap-and-Tax; Federal Domination Over Every Drop Of Water; and, let’s not forget We’re Going To Spend Our Way To Prosperity) – the only thing that anyone in disagreement should say is…(what?).  If the response is “We’ve got a mandate to do what we’re doing to the American people – they voted for ‘Change’” – let’s replay the tapes from former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and his approach to the way government should operate back then…

There should be alternatives put forth:

Okay, instead of the Cap-and-Tax Climate Change approach that’s on the table – let’s promote the merits of alternative energy without taxing the be-jezzes out of non-green energy.  Instead of the world domination focus of the Environmental Protection Agency through the “Reauthorization of the Clean Water Act” – how about we follow the U.S. Supreme Court ruling and manage water pollution within the scenario of “navigable” waters?   As opposed to the federal government spending us to a bright new, thriving “stimulated” economy – why not use the approach that has actually worked in the past where we grew the private sector with meaningful tax reductions that created wealth…

When confronted with these alternatives, who says “No” then?

Hopefully, those who seek to twist legitimate opposition and re-serve it for their own slanted purposes will also be hearing a loud “No” when November of 2010 rolls around and they seek to have voters return them to their perceived positions of power.
