Climate Change Boondoggle – Please Tell Us What It Will Cost

By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

In one of our most recent post we shared the position that U.S. Senator Harry Reid has taken in support of the federal government imposing the cap-and-trade system to force carbon-based energy prices to increase.  We also highlighted that he shared a Website that Senator Reid referred us to for someone to go to learn from the Department of Energy that it won’t actually cost very much if the legislative proposal is adopted.  The most recent analysis on the Website goes back to April and doesn’t really do all that great of job of explaining anything, but never-the-less, we’re told that those “who know” believe it will have little fiscal impact.

U.S. Senator Mike Johanns of Nebraska is continuing in his pursuit of having the U.S. Department of Agriculture figure out what the costs for implementing cap-and-trade will be for American agriculture.  As the former Secretary of Agriculture, Senator Johanns, probably has some understanding of the ability of USDA economist to come up with such a report.

Senator Johanns’ letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack request an analysis of the cost of cap-and-trade legislation for agricultural producers, organized by commodity and by state. He also requested that the analysis be included in any testimony USDA presents to the Senate Agriculture Committee next week.
“USDA provided testimony to the U.S. Senate for the second time in two weeks without also presenting analyses of the increased costs American agricultural producers would pay under the cap-and-trade bill passed in the House last month,” Johanns wrote. “According to USDA’s testimony, the department knows that cap-and-trade will increase agriculture production costs, but asserts that the opportunities will outweigh these costs. I hope this assessment is based on sound economic analysis and not just rhetoric.”

So far the official government agency line (which makes us somewhat less than totally convinced that the Energy Department’s numbers might be a little off) is that this wonderful idea of saving the planet from melt-down isn’t going to cost a thing…quit worry about it…it will be next to nothing.

Thank you Senator Johanns for your work to get numbers down in black and white on what this Climate Change boondoggle is going to costs.  It’s too bad more U.S. Senators weren’t also as interested in identifying these facts for their constituents.  But, I guess if the actual numbers were presented, we might not be quite as supportive of running our economy over the edge of the cliff.
