Is This Really The Kind Of Economy That Appears To Need More Taxes?
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
As the 2009 Nevada Legislature contemplated the approach to take in the face of a dire and sick economy, the decided the solution would be to increase spending for the coming two-year budget period and raise taxes about $1 billion. As we see here, throwing the private sector a tax anchor instead of a life-line hasn’t been working out so well. It continues to appear very likely that the calendar year won’t end without some type of action needed to reduce the state spending levels that were approved by the 75th Legislature, but as we’ve already observed…those in the majority party believe the real problem is that there isn’t enough taxing taking place.
With the efforts by our elected leaders in Washington, D.C. we can expect even further requirements for increased tax burdens. Government’s generosity can only be achieved through the extraction of funds from the pockets of those paying the taxes.
As things continue on our journey to “change” we can’t help but wonder how long it will take to tax our way to prosperity?
