Here’s The Rub On Why 50-50 Isn’t Equally Divided
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Even when it comes to States, "whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting over."
As I re-did the numbers that were included in the Nevada-Utah Snake Valley Groundwater Agreement, currently open for public comment, I kept coming up with the number of acre feet of water dividing 50 percent for Utah and 50 percent for Nevada. When I got the comments back to that Blog post, saying that it wasn’t an equal split, I couldn’t see where I did my calculating wrong…
A Google search brought up this news story from Millard County in Utah and I was able to read into where the equal isn’t each side of the Snake Valley line getting the same amount of water. The argument being made is that the “allocated” 55,000 acre feet of water on the Utah side of the ledger doesn’t all go to Utah because 20,000 acre feet of that total is dedicated to the Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge.
An interesting argument to be sure, although the complaint might be more between Utah and the authorities of the Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge as opposed to being in conflict with Utah and Nevada.
It would seem from the comments we’re seeing, there is also a need to address the details of a water right owner having protection from the Southern Nevada Water Authority, with an ability to have their state stand up for them as opposed to having to prove they were wronged by the entity that could very easily be causing the harm.
Thank you for those who have already shared their feedback and responses, giving all of us some further points to raise in our comments. Possibly more insights and push-back will come as the result of the current public meetings being held.
