How’s That Increase In The Taxes Employers Pay For Employees Working Out?

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Given this continuing theme of news I wonder how the tax increases that the Nevada Legislature adopted as part of their solution to increase the state’s budget is working out…

Depending on how the politics play out, we probably are going to see the Nevada Legislature come back to deal with the budget mess that won’t be able to be met because of reduced revenue flows into state coffers.  Going into the 2010 election cycle it will be interesting to see whether those who want to get re-elected will be standing proudly on their past accomplishments of extracting larger amounts of taxes from the private sector, already struggling to keep their financial heads above water?  Probably those of the majority party, who controlled the outcomes of the 2009 Legislative session, will be to blame the entire situation on the Governor.

As those who do the electing, we should not permit finger pointing to be an acceptable substitute for being accountable.  Those who voted to increase Nevada taxes, especially those charged to business entities on the basis of employee payroll amounts should be evaluated for re-election on this vote.

If you are going to keep electing tax-raisers to be your representative – your taxes are going to keep going up.  The alternative is to elect legislators who recognize that what government spends they took away from taxpayers first.  These types of representatives might be more willing to figure out appropriate priorities for state spending and stay within the means of taxpayers to shoulder the burden.
