Plans To Go Forward With The Southern Nevada Water Pipeline Continue

By: Doug Busselman

On the same day that the governing Board for the Southern Nevada Water Authority voted to give their approval to going forward (at least with the next steps) of the pipeline envisioned to bring water from three rural Nevada counties the announcement also came out that the deadline had been extended for the draft agreement between Nevada and Utah concerning management of Snake Valley’s groundwater.  The new deadline for public comment and input has been set for September 30, 2009.

Many believe that the Snake Valley water is a key component in the overall context of the pipeline’s future.  Receiving enough water from the pending applications in Snake Valley could be the make-or-break factor to justify or scrap the construction of an extremely expensive pipeline.

Under the provisional terms of the Nevada and Utah groundwater management agreement, Nevada water authorities would hold off making any determinations on the pending applications until after September 1, 2019.  Between then and now the game plan would include a whole lot of information and fact gathering to establish a more clear understanding of the implications of extracting water from the area.

Those who wish to download the draft agreement in order to review and offer input can do so by going to www.waterrights.utah.gov

Written comments to the draft agreement (remember new comment deadline is Wednesday, September 30th) can be submitted via e-mail to either of these addresses:
