Insights Into Nevada’s Spending

By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

The general idea is that if Nevada citizens can access information on how their state spends money, there will be a greater ability for those citizens to participate in providing input on state budget matters.  As we see from this account of the Nevada News Bureau there is progress on development on the information system available for Nevadans on the state’s spending.

Beyond the access to Nevada Open Government and the information provided, there also needs to be an on-going willingness by citizens to access the data and then contact their elected representatives to share their perspectives on the insight that has been acquired.  Citizenship needs to change from a passive condition to an on-going pursuit, being informed and using the knowledge to offer direction for those who represent you.

It has become popular to bemoan the degree of influence provided by “special interests” who make the effort to figure out the avenues available for being listened to.  Making it a priority to be aware of what’s going on and then taking action to follow-up needs to be a commitment that each of us makes for our individual and collective good.
