Things Might Be Tough, But Why Is Government The Answer?

By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Yes, we have problems.  The economy isn’t doing very well.  People have lost their jobs.  People have lost their homes, for lack of ability to pay back loans (they might not have been able to afford in the first place).  So, as we read here in this Las Vegas Sun article, we should spend time thinking about how our Nevada taxes aren’t high enough and government isn’t doing more.

Looking back over the state’s history (since this “news” article writer thinks we should be feeling sorry for ourselves on our state’s birthday for our lack of more government) there have been other times when things didn’t go perfectly.  Journals from the earliest explorers indicate they had it rough back then too.  They had to eat their horses because they couldn’t find other sources of food.  I don’t recall any of those accounts bemoaning how it could all be different if only there were more taxes and a healthier line of state financing to pump money into the University system.

We seem to have a societal mind-set (that I would suggest is really at the heart of the whole darn mess) that government is the only alternative for any hope of recovery.  People can’t survive without a government check…business can’t find Nevada or even begin operations if they don’t have a state agency or government-paid University officials guiding their path and getting them off the ground…

If government isn’t paying money (creating Trillions of dollars in debt for taxpayers) not a job will be created or “saved”.

There might be cause for the pessimism articulated in the Las Vegas Sun article we’ve highlighted, but my disgust will be on the attitude of reliance.
