Now There Should Be Accountability
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Federal dollars make miracles happen. If you don’t believe that’s the case, take a look at this Las Vegas Sun editorial where suddenly the inability to collect on Uncle Sam handouts, there’s a reason to change state law with Nevada teachers possibly being held accountable for whether students learned anything. Notice the theme of the editorial, it’s the Governor’s fault that he’s not calling a special session to change the law…During the legislative session and earlier this interim the state legislature, under the control of the party that knows the solution to everything is more government – didn’t do anything about changing the law (might have been something that their teacher union controllers told them not to do).
Even though the Las Vegas Sun is new to the idea of teacher accountability, it’s an idea that’s been covered by advocates for responsible government for some time. Here’s a repeated theme that the Nevada Policy Research Institute has been offering for a long time.
Beyond the short-sighted view that there shouldn’t be a nickel left on the table when it comes to collecting federal handouts, the idea of holding Nevada teachers accountable might have even greater benefits – students who learn something and taxpayers who get their money’s worth.
