We Need To Remember

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

November 7, 2009 is a day we need to make special note to remember.  We need to write down and not let slip into the foggy past the action taken by 220 members of the U.S. House (especially noting the votes by Congresswoman Shelly Berkley and Congresswoman Dina Titus).  As these representatives of southern Nevada have done on other occasions (notably in their support for passage of the House version of the Cap-and-Tax Climate Change bill)…their votes were in favor of increased federal government control and heavier government-created burden on the financial well-being of individuals and business enterprises.

We have been told by those who initiated, contemplated and passed the government-controlled health payment scheme that this action is required to help American citizens not capable of accessing or affording health care services.  These advocates have said that through the implementation of the centrally-planned and operated health reform system health care will be less expensive and more comprehensive in coverage, assuring that everybody but those who are in our country without proper citizenship paperwork are covered.  This is accomplished by mandate that each of us will have health care payment coverage…business enterprises will be required to provide employees with mandated coverage programs…taxes and penalties will be assessed to make certain compliance is achieved.

Along with the promises that have been offered as the excuses for needing this level of attention, we also need to remember the current availability of health care services.  As time goes on and bureaucratic involvement escalates we will need to remember how once our country was the place where others from the world came to receive world-class health care services.  It will be worth reminding our government officials that constraining opportunities or limiting availability was not part of their promised list of benefits.  Supposedly, Doctors and their patients will determine health care treatments – not bureaucratic czars or their henchmen.  We need to remember.

Accountability for the actions taken can only be achieved by remembering those who cast their votes in favor of greater government and reduced individual freedom.  In the event that the votes they cast as our representatives are not responded to with clear and decisive rejection in November of 2010, we will continue to receive legislative votes that support greater government control and reduced individual freedom.   We need to remember and take action at the ballot box which signals a different course, for limited and responsible government.
