Defining The Boundaries Of Government
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Although it is highly unlikely that the Founding Fathers could have envisioned the outcome of Saturday night’s vote to bring the proposal for socialized medicine to the floor of the U.S. Senate for consideration, the debate of the role of government has been with us since the formation of our country. It would not have been possible for our forefathers to envision a day and time where U.S. Citizens would be required, by law, to purchase a health care payment policy, pay a forced tax if they didn’t, and have the federal government they were working to create get into a variety of private sector business pursuits including sale of the health care payment that the government is requiring.
Those who believe that government’s expansion for the supposed benefit of “We, the People” would argue that today is not then and government’s pursuit of doing what our elected representatives are doing is because of the election that gave the Party the majority it has to do what it is doing. The checks and balances as well as the Constitution itself were approved for the purpose of keeping the short-term passions of the majority from running over the interests and rights of the minority.
Given the current philosophy that the principles of the Constitution are flexible ideas that can be determined on the whim of the moment it is unlikely that obtaining a government which lives within appropriate boundaries can only be accomplished through the election of legislative representatives (at the state and national level) who respect and advocate adherence to the foundations of the Constitution – The “Congress shall make no laws” ideas that don’t get much attention right now under current leadership.
The values of self determination, personal responsibility and accountability and other daily approaches which reject government being the source of all that is provided must become the proactive pillars that we use in judging candidates for our votes. Electing on the basis of “what will you get for us” – and evaluation of how well someone “brings home the bacon” have to be recognized for being what they are – government sponsored theft. While the totals of the voters who believe themselves entitled to be on the receiving side of the equation appear to be a higher percentage than those who are being required to pay out – the effort must be made to elect representatives who seek our vote on the principles of responsible spending and minimal taxation.
Although Nevada citizens who support appropriate boundaries for government aren’t part of the mix in setting the public vision that Nevada lawmakers hope to be able to use to translate as justification for higher and expanded tax extractions…every effort must be made to use the campaign process to formulate a workable alternative. Support for ideas like the outline provided by Nevada Senate candidate Todd Bailey should become models for advancing solutions that promote the cause of support and defense of the private sector.
