There Is No One Who This Bunch Doesn’t Want More Taxes From
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Even before the Nevada Interim Legislative Tax-Study Committee comes to the conclusion that the 2011 Legislative Session should include a package of new taxes for another round of rampant spending – the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN) gained recognition for their idea to use the 2010 election process to increase taxes on the state’s mining industry. PLAN thinking that mining should be paying more in taxes isn’t a news revelation. Most of the players in this organization are seeking to destroy mining through whatever methods they can – when they aren’t wearing their PLAN tax outfits they are adorned in the uniforms of other groups…also trying to crash mining operations.
From the last legislative session (going into it, during the session and now – after) mining is wearing the main bull’s-eye for who to be targeted for a tax raid by a government incapable of living within its means.
Following the Nevada teachers’ union approach of targeting deep pockets to put on the ballot for extraction -- PLAN thinks they will be able to exploit a business sector that is profitable regardless of whatever damage might be caused. We don’t even have to wait to see the predictable campaign theme of creating envy they will be using to justify taking whatever they want. With Nevada’s and our country’s economic situation being what it is, we need to be building opportunities for business operations to be profitable – not looking at those who are as tax targets.
Those of us who aren’t in mining should be hoping (and actively working during the campaign season) that PLAN’s plan fails. If you recall their tax plan going into the 2009 Legislative session included a huge tax agenda, including an income tax.
This pack of tax-eaters have no limits to their appetite. Their advocacy is based completely on the platform of spending other people’s money for their visions of social good.
