Spending Our Way To Bigger Taxes
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
According to the economic logic of the majority party in power of government (nationally and here in Nevada), government doing the job that it is supposed to do can be the source of prosperity – as long as those of us who pay the taxes do more to provide to our government coffers. As an engaged participant in the 2009 Nevada Legislature, I was very well aware of the convincing arguments offered for why the state of Nevada simply couldn’t survive without the nearly Billion dollar increase in taxes. We were told In no uncertain terms how the Legislature had “cut” everything to the bone. There were emotional apologies and righteous indignation shared about how there just wasn’t enough money for lawmakers to spend on those who deserved expanded (rather than reduced) checks.
Given this frame of reference and preparing for the start of the 2011 set of reasons for greater levels of taxes as well as invention of new “revenue stabilization” strategies – this background information from Geoffrey Lawrence of the Nevada Policy Research Institute is extremely helpful. It offers some insights into why if you only listen to what your elected representatives are telling you – you might miss the actual specifics of what they are doing to you. Real numbers and what they tell is not exactly what you’re going to hear from the person asking for you to re-elect them so they can keep doing more of what they’ve been doing.
If we elect enough of a majority of those who currently are the majority party – we will continue to get what they do…spend more, expand the intrusion and size of government and charge us more (increasing taxes) for doing these “great” things. Although the members of the minority party haven’t always been quite as stout of defenders of limited government as we would like them to be – the fact remains… if enough of the current majority party is returned to legislate on our behalf, they will do what they do…spend more, expand the intrusion and size of government and charge us more (increasing taxes) for doing these great things.
The end result that must be our goal for November is un-electing those in the current majority party (at the state and national levels of government) and replacing them with someone else who will not spend more, expand the intrusion and size of government and charge us more (increasing taxes) for doing the “great” things we are told government is doing for us. Government cannot and does not spend us to better circumstances – they spend us to higher taxes.
