Energy Policy Created And Implemented For The Right Reasons

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Nevada would like to become the alternative center of the universe – at least that seems to be the theme of most proactive discussions I’ve been around.  Our state’s resources of geothermal assets and abundant sunlight offer a great deal of potential for producing electrical energy.  These opportunities need to be developed along with the necessary infrastructure.

Policies oriented to producing alternative energy should not be based on an exclusive basis.  A health economy – something that is critical locally, statewide and nationally – requires affordable energy supplies.  Pursuit of alternative energy must be realized with something other than government actions geared to artificially increase costs of and limit supplies of traditional, carbon-based fuels.

We need to reject and reverse the political philosophies of central-control and restraints which prevent development and use of our domestic supplies of oil and coal.  Along with developing the infrastructure for alternative energy resources, we also need to be aggressively working to expand the infrastructure necessary for producing traditional energy products.  For too long we’ve put off the necessary investment and activities which are required to establish modern refineries and other components for the production of carbon-related fuels.

The false choice of going green at the expense of a healthy economy should be recognized for what it is and those elected to provide representation need to be held accountable for delivery of policies which allow for responsible expansion of the capacity for all energy…politically correct or not.
