Posturing For A Tax Increase
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Never let a crisis go unused is the mantra of those who advance the never-ending quest to force us to accept more and more government. Watching the Nevada Legislative Interim Finance committee go through their paces of holding public fact finding hearings over the past couple of weeks and re-reading David Horowitz’s “The Art of Political War” the transparent manipulation and maneuvering to bring us to a tax increase is crystal clear.
The legislators have been meeting behind closed doors working to come up with their action plan to deal with the $900 Million hole that their 2009 Nevada Legislative session Billion-dollar tax increase contributed to. It was this increased tax load that gave them the ability to increase state spending to the level that can’t be sustained now with the income which taxes are bringing in. Through their righteous public indignation over having the Governor point these facts out and their responses of how politically crass the Governor is for alluding to how their actions are culpable for the shortage of money to cover the bills they’ve wrung up – they have played the wounded (and wronged) victim very well. By the book, so to speak…
In his response to the Governor’s address, Senator Stephen Horsford pushed all the predictable buttons, wrapping the legislature’s difficult work in the political bubble-wrap of the children and how their educational needs will be harmed if the thousands of teachers and educational professionals should be called on to sacrifice their sacred (and currently not affordable) positions. Big business (mining and banks specifically noted) should be marched in and forced to cough up their “fair share” of the taxes. (This of course leaves unsaid the facts that mining and banks operating in Nevada already pay more of their “fair share” than anyone else…except for gaming.)
Also well-played has been the tortuous detail that has gone into the public presentations of how painful the cuts will be (game plan note…meet behind closed doors to discuss legislative solution – hold public meetings to serve as platforms for pain and suffering Nevada’s dependent public will have to endure). We are also seeing the steady imploring of the tax increase crowd…from the elite and pampered Ivory Towers of the state's Universities to the downtrodden handicap and oppressed – “just a little tax increase will be better than the cruel and unwarranted cuts…”
The work of moving the leftist agenda of the ruling Democratic party leaders to the reasonable middle is also underway with their supporters taking them to task for being so hard-hearted to not do the right thing and increase those taxes on the greedy not willing to anti-up and hand-it-over. Again, all very much by the book in posturing the outcome of government’s plunder of the private sector’s pocketbooks.
Governor Gibbons is the villain because he is fulfilling the promises he made to not go along with tax increases – how mindless and inappropriate! Those who tax and provide resources for those at the government trough…they are the heroes who should be honored for saying that they didn’t want tax increases, but then passed them anyway… It’s okay to dig deeper into other people’s pockets, for their money, when you’re doing the digging to improve government “essential” services and provide for the needy and the bureaucratic structure which makes it all possible…
It’s only a matter of time…and discovery of the exact details of who and how much. As long as we keep electing the party’s faithful to push the buttons for tax increases – they are going to keep taking as much as they can get away with taking. There is no end or limits of needing more...
