A Contract From America – What Do You Think Of These Ideas?
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
In our country’s history there was a Tea Party to let the British rulers know what Americans thought of the tax plans that the government of the time had in mind. It seems that Tax Day 2010 has it’s own brand of Tea Party resurrections with a set of principles being proposed for our modern-day government to adopt. Thank you to the Huffington Post for sharing this story which offered the ideas put forward.
As opposed to the once popular “Contract With America”, this set of things for our government to do comes FROM America, with hopefully the actions at the ballot box to bring about either a change in the persons holding office or a change in the direction that government is going…
The ideas in the 2010 Contract From America:
For those who are interested in networking with the folks involved in this effort, we pass along this link and encouragement for you to spread the word. Reforms of the nature envisioned here can’t take place in a vacuum. They need a highly motivated and engaged group of people to make it happen. That type of change is essential for the 2010 election process with extremely charged citizens taking back their country and replacing entrenched political types who don’t represent the values that are encompassed by these 10 principles.

The ideas in the 2010 Contract From America:
- Protect the Constitution – the general idea is to require bills to identify what specific provisions in the Constitution authorizes Congress to have the authority to do what the bill calls for.
- Reject Cap & Trade – this idea not only includes the legislative proposal that we’re hearing Senator Harry Reid would like to pass this summer in the Senate, but also stopping the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from going forward with the proposal to regulate us into Climate Control.
- Balance Budget – this proposal calls for the start of the Constitutional amendment process to require a federal balanced budget and also seeks to install a two-thirds requirement for tax increases.
- Tax Reform – this proposal seeks a simple and fair, single-rate tax system.
- Fiscal Responsibility and Constitutionally Limited Federal Government – this proposal considers the approach of a comprehensive study with an eye on determining things that belong as responsibilities for the state and local governments to deal with.
- Limit Federal Spending – this idea (which Nevada state government should also have in place) would restrict increases in government spending, capping the amounts to a formula that is based on increases not exceeding inflation plus population growth.
- Defund, Repeal and Replace Government-Run Health Care – the replacement plan basically moves to an approach where state boundaries no longer restrict competitive marketing of health payment insurance plans from being available across the country.
- Adopt an All-The Above Energy Policy – instead of Washington, D.C. limiting energy development and preventing access to resources we have available in our own country, this approach calls for full-scale development of domestic resources of all varieties.
- Stop Pork Spending – this proposal would stop the use of earmarks entirely until the budget is balanced and then would require a two-thirds majority vote to approve any earmark.
- Stop Tax Hikes – this proposal rightfully would make the taxes that were reduced under the Bush Tax Cut actions (including the Death Tax and Capital Gains) from going back into effect as scheduled in 2011.
