Climate Change Earth Day Connections A Whole Lot Of Hot Air
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
From what is being promoted we can expect to see this year’s Earth Day rally to center on attempting to stir up actions in the U.S. Senate to try and pass a Climate Change – Big Brother solution to force Americans to pay higher prices for energy, while enriching the coffers of their control-oriented government at the same time. Like a number of others , we aren’t exactly on the same page of that play-book and would very much like to see reason and rationale activity be advanced.
For those who believe that Nevada (and the rest of the world) should become geared up to produce electrical energy from alternative sources (wind, solar, geothermal) – our response is Go For It! There is nothing (except affordability and infrastructure) standing in the way of Nevada being the “Saudi Arabia” of alternative electrical energy.
Along with a burning desire for the federal government to control our lives to every extent possible – it’s the affordability problem that is at the heart of the drive to force energy prices skyward. Since the market can’t make alternative energy pencil out to a point where people actually are willing to go that route, the plan is for taxes and other government mechanisms to “assist” in requiring the desired end results. After all, destroying our economic well-being is something that government (under the control of the political party in charge) has proven to be very good at .
If the efforts currently directed at destroying our nation’s economic future were as focused on taking care of the environment through productive efforts, we and the environment would be better off. In spite of the rhetoric and bashing of the private enterprise, capitalistic system -- we only have to look to see that a healthy U.S. economy has proven to be the greatest approach to proper conservation and stewardship of our planet's natural resource base. Think back to the environmental track record of the teetering economies of the Soviet Union and other socialistic regimes – why is it that those who promote environmental health and well-being are so inclined to want to install the type of government which brought about those results?
As we draw closer to Earth Day 2010, perhaps considering the reality of actual performance of environmental actions, as opposed to the public relations hype of being green, will bring us to a better understanding of what is actually needed to accomplish the worthwhile goals of proper care and responsibility for environmental resource management.
