Department of Transportation Wants More Of Your Money

By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

The Nevada Department of Transportation is literally taking their show on the road “asking” for your input on how they can get more of your money …orange construction cones and the public works projects that are paid for with your tax dollars require you to dig deeper (perhaps with more creative extraction methods).  The one solution they would like to impose is the ride-alone tracker to establish the system where government can determine what kind of vehicle you are driving, the roads you travel on, when you are doing your driving, etc.  From this real-time data they can set up a “fair” system to find who should be doing the paying that they decide needs to be paid.

The old fashion, collect at the pump method hasn’t been delivering the amount of revenue that meets the road budget the Department wants to work with.  Road construction companies are also interested in that budget being more flush so they can obtain the work that they want to get rolling with.

Washoe County is being recognized for its achievement in passing a ballot question which indexes the tax rate that they collect at the gas pumps…no matter what the tax rate will continue to increase, making those who operate the local regional transportation authority able to put out more signs telling us that this project is another example of “your tax dollars at work”.  Depending on how the big brother tracking taxation system goes, there may be a push to bring about fuel tax indexing for all of Nevada.

Actually, we’re probably going to see all kinds of new tax schemes presented in order to meet the unsatisfied requirements of the Department of Transportation’s pending list of big ticket construction projects.
