Wondering What Might Have Happened With Our Vision

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Over the past few days there have been several opinion pieces that I’ve read on the subject of the Nevada Vision Stakeholders and the plan that we are supposed to be coming up with to turn over to the Nevada Legislative Interim Committee at the end of this month.  This piece by Steve Miller at the Nevada Policy Research Institute fairly well documents the pitfalls for taking the route that the central-planning concept seeks to accomplish, especially when the “stakeholders” are more representative of those who spend tax dollars than pay the taxes.

This isn’t to say that interest of the private sector are not represented on the Vision Stakeholders group, along with myself, gaming and construction representatives are included (as was mining before Joe Dini from Yerington needed to resign).  So far, since meeting since January, there hasn’t been any votes or decisions which would have caused the weighted advantage of the non-private sector to have any sway.  How that might play itself out in the future is not certain, although not a guarantee of a decision going one way or another.  Nearly all of the discussion – so far – has been open with consideration of ideas received and given without an outcome, so who might gain or who might be put at a disadvantage hasn’t been determined.

At the end our last meeting, mid-May, we were told that another “last meeting” would be held after receiving a more extensive document for review and consideration.   The “Executive Summary” would be given a document on which we would be able to see what our actual vision might look like, hopefully with substance to understand how the ideas connected to where we thought things should go.

With the exception of a couple of reporters asking and some friends checking in to see if anything new had developed, there’s not been any word on when the group will be getting back together or a hint on what might be in the document being prepared by the consultant hired to operate the process.  I remember from my past awaiting something and running to the mailbox on a daily basis to see if there was any word or delivery.  Today that process is accomplished by logging on to the computer and checking into the e-mail arrivals.

Maybe today the package will come, but so far our vision for Nevada’s future is still pending.
