What’s Extreme – How Is That Going To Be Spun?

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Yesterday the campaign for November got underway with a barrage of news releases and e-mails sent out by the campaign of our state’s senior U.S. Senator to portray his opponent as an extremist not capable of representing Nevada.  From the looks of this editorial , the Senator will have willing allies who are going to serve as his mouthpiece in spreading the word.  As a publication, they have also shown with this “news” story that they will use other portions of the paper for more of the same.

Dispelling the point-by-point arguments would be a total waste of time, but suffice it to say that the question might be better aimed back at the supposedly “most powerful” Senator in the U.S. Senate, asking what exactly do you have for a solution to the bankrupt condition that you and your colleagues have left Social Security in?  Yes, we get the part that to hold onto your job, you will slam the ideas of others, attempting to scare the old folks to your side by portraying alternative solutions as “extreme” – but, what isn’t extreme about the agenda that your party has advanced?

Isn’t a secular, socialist approach for expanding government…making special backroom deals to build legislation without public hearings…rearranging the legislative process to ram-and-jam pork-laden bills that haven’t even been read – just a little bit on the “extreme” side too?  What has happened to our country and what you have in mind for more of the same is even more “extreme” than suggestions that something needs to be done to bring about fiscal responsibility and putting the leviathan of government back into the boundaries where it belongs.

Along the way to November we would hope that the “moderate” middle who are considered the targets for the messages being sent by the incumbent will think with their minds and figure out that 2+2 does equal 4 and that the mess our country is in does connect to those who have been in power for the past number of years.  Accountability would be a wonderful achievement to realize in November, replacing those who support the Big Brother government we’ve gotten with the responsible, limited government we’re supposed to have.

When the founders of our country came together to craft the Declaration of Independence and the won the freedom from the tyrant of their time…that might have been perceived to be a little “extreme” for some.  When they put together the constitution for a government run by the people – instead of the form of government our current leaders are operating – that might have been considered “extreme” by some.  Throughout our history, the point of view which places individual opportunity above the burden of government control has (and still is from the sounds of things) an “extreme” position.

Given the tactics of how this campaign appears to be shaping up it will be worthwhile to recognize the messages of the incumbent for what they are – desperate grasp to hold on to power regardless of what is good for the people of Nevada.
