Making It Up As They Go

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

The television commercial last night promoted the 300 or so jobs that our senior U.S. Senator got going for a solar panel farm project in southern Nevada.  Yes, it’s good work, while it last.  What happens to the jobs after the panels are all installed?

Our federal (and to some extent state of Nevada) government want to build a new green economy, based on jobs and economic activity oriented around alternative energy and other perceived do-good projects for the environment.  There is no shortage of money being put forth by government handouts for this “green economy”…even though as we read here , there’s not a real good idea what the money is getting us.  What happens to the green economy without the federal subsidies and stimulus dollars?

I suppose it will give those who want to take credit, the opportunity for taking credit.  Will those who are targeted for the message of “look how much I’ve been doing for you” recognize that the doing is really being done to us?

Regardless of whatever government invented crisis that our Big Brother government champions are trying to convince us they are solving…the ones paying the bill for the solving are us.  Government only has whatever they take from us.  So why are we supposed to be so impressed with how lucky we are to have someone so powerful representing us, when all they work to do is impose greater burdens of government (regulations, taxes and government debt) on top of an already weakened private sector?

The best route would be to move away from government doing so much to take care of us and let us keep more of our resources and spend it in ways that grows our economy – instead of destroys it.  This route is only going to be possible by electing a different crowd of representatives in November.  Those who we need to represent us are the ones who don’t need to make up the wonderful things that they are doing for us, while they’re digging deeper into our pocketbooks to pay for more government.
