Thank You For Votes In Support Of Property Rights

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Of the variety of outcomes of Tuesday’s election perhaps the most gratifying victory was the defeat of Nevada’s Ballot Question 4, which sought to erase the Constitutional protections voters put in place in 2006 and 2008 concerning private property.  In spite of a disingenuous message on how the proposed changes to those property rights protections were still going to be upheld in the watered down version, voters saw through the guise and decisively rejected the proposal.  Three election cycles in a row, Nevada citizens clearly demonstrated their fundamental insight of the necessity of protecting private property rights from their government officials’ intentions to misuse eminent domain.

The outcome of this year’s Question 4 vote came with the proponents of the proposal conducting a campaign to get their end-around action past voters and really no organized effort that spent any money to oppose the measure.  If would be interesting to see where the funding came to back the failed question – there are a few suspects who fit the mold of interests inclined to view other people’s property as their rightful claim…but, some of those folks aren’t supposed to be spending public funds for this type of campaign effort.  Between misleading billboards and a massive robo-call outreach (at least in the Washoe county area)  featuring Reno’s “Republican” Mayor attempting to talk voters into voting “Yes” there was some worry that we would see a different outcome than the massive rejection voters gave the idea.

It seems that citizens almost instinctively understand that government’s intentions for taking private property needs to be significantly constrained with the types of protections in place and still intact in Nevada’s Constitution.  Even after the firestorm of indignation has died down after the U.S. Supreme Court’s fateful decision on Kelo, citizens maintain their wary view of what government agencies and officials have in mind when it comes to wanting liberal license to trample private property rights.

Thank you fellow voters for your decisive action in defeating Question 4.  Please continue to remain vigilant and on your guard for future efforts that are sure to come which will also seek to undermine the rightful safeguards that are in place.
