A Resolution To Get Involved And Make A Difference
By: Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President
Possibly this post is a week in advance for when you are supposed to be considering resolutions to do stuff for the coming year, but with the prospects of what 2011 looks like – getting an early start is necessary. It might also have something to do with the emphasis that I’ve been involved with over the past month or so – getting ready for working at making a difference in the coming year.
Most of our focus is oriented to the legislative aspects of the public policy arena and deals with either Washington, D.C. or Carson City. On the other hand, current involvement also is on actual on-the-ground activities for Endangered Species habitat conservation and appropriate management for Wild Horse populations. There will be action needed on water, maintaining access/use for federally managed lands and who knows what else that government agencies have been plotting to “help us” with…
Having written before of how much we really would prefer to just be left alone and allowed to carry through with life’s activities and not have to spend so much time or effort on protecting ourselves from government’s intrusion – it’s not on other people’s “to do list” to allow that to happen. Based on watching the actions and would-liked-to-have-done things during the lame duck session in Washington, D.C. – some folks didn’t get the memo about the recent election and having a government not as intent on growing its tentacles deeper into our personal lives. Some of the public pronouncements we’re seeing from Nevada Legislative leaders would also seem to indicate that growing our state government with additional private sector resources is still at the top of their hoped for accomplishments as well.
This brings us to remembering that all of the people who were elected or re-elected still need our guidance/input for what they should be doing when it comes to representing us. Making it a point to stay in touch with those we’ve given this responsibility is a necessity that can’t be overlooked in the coming year.
While a lot of the motivation for action in 2010 was geared to the populist uprising of battling entrenched elites who believe it is their purpose to rule (and our job to pick up the tab) – “the mad-as-hell…we’re not going to take it anymore” must mature into engagement of a different ilk. We need to understand that the forces we are working against don’t take “No” as an answer. Their cause is to continue to advance central control and command, erasing individual freedom and using government authority to force us to get what they suggest is “good for us”.
It may be a week early for the resolution I hope that you make – to be involved and make a difference in 2011 – but, whether you make it now or sometime down the road…we look forward to you joining the effort!
