The Battle Plan For Bigger Nevada Government

By:  Doug Busselman, Executive Vice President

Those in charge of the Nevada Legislature (the majority party leaders) want Nevada government to grow and become bigger, financed by more tax revenues and capable of distributing to their loyal union constituents and fellow tax consumers greater bounty.  This purpose is not a new mission or a single legislative session venture.  It is a long-term battle, planned for and fought repeatedly in an assault against Nevada taxpayers which will continue as long as they remain the party in charge of the Nevada legislative process.

More and more, reality should become clearer on how those who believe that government is more important than individuals operate.  Although paying attention to history would reinforce an understanding of the tried and true tactics we’re seeing in operation today, we may not be able to learn from history as much as we could benefit from, if we would.

As we will see portrayed in the grandstanding of the legislative week ahead, the next phase of Operation - Grow A More Intrusive Nevada Government will commence.

The effort to increase Nevada’s tax flow has been an on-going pursuit with a variety of key victories for more being won over the years.  Portraying our state’s tax structure as wanting has become as natural as taking the next breath for those who believe in the true good that can only come from bigger Nevada government.  Ever on the prowl for the most magic of all tax types (one which will produce untold revenue regardless of the economic hardship experienced by the private sector – you know the ones who are supposed to pay…) we’ve seen a variety of new and exciting potentials.  This session’s candidate in waiting is inferred to be Nevada adoption of the Texas Franchise Tax.

Then again, there might be other additional tax types which could be added as well to the mix – you can never have enough ways of extracting necessary revenue.

Before we can get to the tax-creating and tax-raising however, you’ve got to create the reason for the season.  The Nevada Vision thing was supposed to be key for that purpose (and it has been part of the arsenal used during the 2011 Legislative Session to make the case for more Nevada government), but it just didn’t quite capture the spirit that could be brought to a boil, when needed.  A more handy approach, unleashed with the most visceral passion has been the budget proposed by Governor Brian Sandoval.

There’s no tax increases in that plan and it proposed to do the unthinkable…cut government spending… and have Nevada government live within the means of the taxpayers to support it!  How dare anyone even imagine that government can be actually reduced!  Shrieks, wailing and gnashing of teeth commence at the thought…

Battle plan – strategy – recruit college students from across Nevada to howl and protest, claiming we’re destroying their future and the destiny of mankind.

Battle plan – tactic – hold “legislative hearings” (or just go there using any excuse) around the state at college campuses so we can better hear the howls and predictions of impending doom.

Perhaps the Colleges and Universities will also oblige and play politics with us, reshaping their message of why they ought to be simply handed a signed, blank check to meet their needs while delivering Nevada the holy grail of economic diversification…

With this infusion of new businesses we could raise more tax revenue and grow even a bigger government!  As we all know (from the frequently repeated contention of those around the Nevada Legislature who have no clue about making a business operate) is the reason that business ventures select a state in which to do business.

They first seek states who are pouring the highest amounts of their spending into education (K-12 and Higher Education) – then they go to those states so they might also be part of contributing.

Nevada can’t seem to catch a break in bringing business to our borders because we don’t have enough going down the drain of our public education system.  Then again the 2011 Legislative Session isn’t over yet…”we” could really win big if "we" just keep working at it!

Be certain to tune in to watch the Nevada Legislature and the Champions of Greater Nevada Government marshal and maneuver this coming week as the battle for your wallet continues…
